Yorkshire Puddings are a staple in my house, the fact that I have lived in Yorkshire all my life is probably why. As most Yorkshire folk will tell you, if you don’t like Yorkshire Puddings you can’t be here. I’m joking of course, but am I really haha!? It’s safe to say we take our puds seriously. So when I decided that I was going to be Vegan the first thing people said to me was “but what about Yorkshire Puddings you won’t be able to have them!”, that was when the realisation hit me, I wasn’t going to be able to have them again!
One month in a sub box we were given Follow Your Heart vegan egg replacers, which they worked to an extent but they didn’t make a proper pud. I gave up on trying to make vegan puds and went on with my life. Until I watched Robyns Youtube video where she made Yorkshire’s using three ingredients which we all probably already have in our cupboards. Are you ready to have your life changed…..
For this “recipe” you will need:
4 tablespoons of Plain Flour
Sparkling water (yes you read that right!)
Coconut Oil or Olive Oil
Mixed Herbs (optional)
A pinch of salt and pepper (optional)
Yorkshire Pudding trays
It is really simple, as you can see I haven’t added the exact measurements for the sparkling water as I pour direct from the bottle. You want your mixture not too thick but not too watery – I think I used around 100-150ml, don’t add it all at once just use a little at a time til it looks right. For my puds I like to add a dash of pepper, a tiny tiny amount of salt,I always pour extra and throw it outside to protect me from witches (thanks Hocus Pocus) occasionally I will add herbs etc but never a lot as it can weigh your mixture down, I find it gives a nice taste.
I recommend pre heating your oven to 200c and whilst it is heating up make your mixture, once the oven is at the temperature add your oil to the pud trays and but in the oven so the oil can heat up. Tip: your oil must be boiling. It normally takes around 10 minutes give or take, you will be able to smell it. Once it is heated pour your mixture into the trays and pop them in the oven for around 30-40 minutes (this depends on your oven, mine is a basic electrical oven). For the puds above they were in the oven for 30 minutes then I turned the oven off and let them stay in there for a further 5 minutes. It really is super simple!
As you can see, I really like this hack, James has tried them and he has agreed with me :so tasty (just goes to show you don’t need to be Vegan to enjoy vegan food)! I love that now when we have family roasts I am able to have Yorkshire puds. The only thing is they don’t rise as much as traditional ones but they taste just as good (without the cruelty) and I am sure you and your loved ones will like them just as much! I want to say a massive thank you to Robyn for posting the video (a while ago) because without her I would be Yorkshire Pudding-less.
